We start the Sillar tour at 8:30 am and second departure is at 1.45 pm with the pickup from your hotel, hostel or you can come directly at our office. We will take you to the bus, parked 2 blocks away.
OVERVIEW
The Sillar route runs through the interior of the quarries, which transport the visitor to the origins and understanding of how the historic center of Arequipa was declared Cultural Heritage Of Humanity by UNESCO. When visiting the quarries in operation you will be able to observe live the ancestral process of extraction of blocks and the carving of the ashlar realized by the hand of the man. You can walk freely inside the quarry to really enjoy the place. The tour guide will give you all the explanations on the bus, after arriving, you will enjoy the place and see many sculptures made by talented craftsmen.
After visiting the quarries, you will also walk through a little canyon and see some pre-Inca petroglyphs, representing 3 of their ancient gods.
We will pick you from your hotel or you can come directly at our agency to start the tour.
On the way, our first stop will be at the Yanahuara viewpoint approximately 15 minutes where we can see the 3 volcanoes from another angle that surrounds the city. The volcanoes are known asMisti, Chachani and Pichu Pichu in which we can take 360 ° panoramic photos. You will also see the famous arcades, made of sillar. There is also the possibility to test the well known «Queso Helado» an ice cream made with cheese.
We will continue the journey to the quarries which is 30 minutes away ; the place where the white city originated, we will enter the quarries where we will observe the immense stones worked by the hand of man. We will explain to you how they extracted all the stones and transport them to the city to built it. He/She will also explainabout the constructions based on the volcanic rock (Sillar).
Then we will have an experiential time to share and interact with these peculiar characters the ancestral technique of ashlar extraction that is still preserved from colonial times to the present.
Continuing with our tour we will board in the transport to visit the Cantera De Culebrillas where we will walk around for 20 minutes. Inside, we will feel a mysterious and unique environment where we can see the presence of petroglyphs that will transfer us to the life and beliefs of the ancient man as this is a sacred place with pink walls, then you will be able to see the presence of apachetas. Our tour guide will be delighted to explain their meaning and their symbolism to all of you. They will also have the experience of putting together their apacheta.
After having made the walk we board the bus to return to the city center where you will be dropped 3 blocks away from the main place, Plaza de Armas.
