The Chili River is located in Arequipa between two colossal volcanoes, Misti and Chachani. The cold water (8°C) originates from the high snow capped Andean peaks near Arequipa, Puno, and Cusco and flows into the National Reserve of Aguada Blanca and Salinas. The river then enters the Chilina Valley of Arequipa and continues through the desert of the Uchumayo District before emptying into the Pacific Ocean.
The Chili River is a vital resource, as it irrigates the Chilina, Vitor and Chilca valleys. Before the Spaniards arrived in 1540, the native inhabitants of the Arequipa region, mainly farmers, considered the Chili River to be a deity and depended on its life giving water. “Chili” in the Aymara language means “rattle” for the sound made by the river when it drags stones over zig-zag passages through the mountains.
During the rainy season, December through March, the water level may rise making the Chili River dangerous for river rafting lovers. Otherwise, the river has sections of rapids ideal for people with or without rafting experience. The Chili River rafting tour is a great experience for nature and adventure lovers and offers spectacular views of the Misti and Chachani volcanoes.
