This three day tour combines the Yanque homestay with the classic two-days Colca Canyon trek. You will get to see the Uyo Uyo ruins of Yanque as well as hike the beautiful Colca Canyon.
You will be picked up from your hotel or hostel in Arequipa’s city center at 7:30 am and we will drive north to Chivay making two stops along the way: at the Patapama lookout and in the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve.
Lunch will be served in Chivay. – After eating, we will drive 10 more minutes to a nearby trailhead where we will start our hike to visit the archeological complex of Uyo Uyo located on the right side of the valley. It was built by the Collaguas people and is said to have functioned as an administration center during the Pre-Inca times. The architecture is very impressive with small streets and water canals surrounded by hundreds of Pre-Incan farming terraces which look like small amphitheaters built into the mountains.
Along the trail we will see the locals working the land using ancestral systems and techniques for agricultural production. Also we will get to see the famous qolqas, small deposits or stores carved into the cliffs of the surrounding mountains.
After completing the hike to Uyo Uyo, we will go to the Yanque hot springs to bathe in the hot pools for approximately one hour.
After relaxing in the hot springs we will head to Yanque to the home of a local family who will give us lodging. Tourists will have the opportunity to share a pleasant experience with their host family in order to learn a little more about their customs and way of life. A typical homemade dinner made of organic, local food from the Caylloma region will be served in the evening.
We will wake up at 6:00 am to eat a traditional breakfast with our host family.
Afterwards, we will enjoy a Folkloric Show in the Yanque main square featuring the typical dance of the region called Wititi and declared cultural heritage.
After saying our goodbyes to our local host family, we will head west to the Condor Cross located on the rim of the Colca Canyon. You will have 45 minutes to enjoy the views and look for condors.
After visiting the Condor Cross, we drive approximately 20 more minutes to the San Miguel trailhead where we will begin the trek. First, we will descend 1000m on a zig zag path down the canyon wall. In approximately three hours we will arrive to a small village called San Juan de Chuccho where we will rest and eat a nutritious lunch.
After resting and eating lunch, we will continue hiking for about two and a half hours along the opposite wall of the canyon until arriving to the Sangalle oasis at approximately 4 pm. Here in Sangalle, you will be assigned a bamboo bungalow and will have the evening to relax in the pool and hammocks. Dinner will be served at 7 pm and afterwards you will retire to you bungalows to sleep.
The following morning, we will wake up at 5 am to climb back out of the canyon to Cabanaconde, a small town situated on the rim of the canyon directly above Sangalle. This three hour, 1000 m climb is the most difficult part of the trek. Everyone can climb at their own pace and the group will reunite at the top.
Breakfast will be served in Cabanaconde and the transportation will pick us up afterwards.
We will make our way back towards Chivay by car making stops at Antawilke to see pre-Incan terraces and the Yanque hotsprings to bathe in the hot pools for one hour.
Upon arriving to Chivay we will stop at a local restaurant to eat a buffet lunch.
We then head back towards Arequipa making two final stops along the way at Patapama and the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve. You will be dropped off back at your hotel around 5:30 pm.
