What you will do:
We will pick you up from where you are staying between 3:00 and 3:30 AM and drive three hours to Chivay. Here, we will stop for simple breakfast of bread, butter, jam, tea, mate and coffee. We then continue to the Condor Cross Viewpoint and stop for 45 minutes to see into the depths of the Colca Canyon and look for Condors flying overhead. Next, we drive a short distance to San Miguel, at 3,300 meters, where we will start the trek.
First, we walk to the bottom of the canyon to the small village San Juan de Chuccho. Here, we will eat a simple lunch of vegetable soup, rice, potatoes and alpaca. There is also a vegetarian option if desired. After lunch, we continue walking to the village Sangalle, passing the small towns of Cosñirhua and Malata along the way. Sangalle is an oasis at 1,900 meters and is deepest point of the trek. Upon arriving, we will eat dinner and relax in the natural fed pools. The meal usually consists of vegetable soup, pasta and tea. You will spend the night in Sangalle and sleep in shared bungalows made of bamboo.
We will wake up at 5:00 AM to stark trekking out of the canyon to Cabanaconde. Here we will eat a simple breakfast of bread, butter, jam, tea, coffee and mate. After breakfast, we will drive back towards Chivay and make various stops along the way to see pre-Incan and Incan terraces, colonial towns, and other views. Our last stop is the Yanque hot springs where we will stay for approximately one hour to enjoy the hot baths.
Afterwards, we will stop for lunch at a local restaurant in Chivay before returning to Arequipa. En route to Arequipa, we descend from 4,830 meters to 2,325 meters and make a couple stops along the way in through the National Reserve of Aguada Blanca and Salinas and Pampa Cañahuas. There we will see four species of South American Camelids: alpacas, llamas, vicuñas, and guanacos. We will arrive in Arequipa at approximately 5:30 PM.
